Royal Enfield Himalayan 440 Launched at ₹2.29 Lakh: The OG Himalayan Returns

Royal Enfield has launched the Himalayan 440 in India, bringing back the design philosophy and accessible adventure-touring character that made the original Himalayan 411 popular. The new motorcycle arrives as the Himalayan name completes 10 years, but rather than trying to replace the more powerful Himalayan 450, the 440 takes a deliberately simpler approach to adventure motorcycling.

Priced at ₹2,29,000 ex-showroom in Tamil Nadu, the Himalayan 440 is powered by a 443cc long-stroke single-cylinder engine producing 25.4 bhp at 6,250 rpm and 34 Nm at 4,000 rpm. It gets a six-speed gearbox, 21-inch front and 17-inch rear spoke wheels, 220mm of ground clearance and an 800mm seat height. Bookings opened on September 4, 2026, through Royal Enfield dealerships and the company’s website.

The motorcycle was unveiled at Royal Enfield’s inaugural Himalayan Basecamp in Ladakh, making the location particularly fitting for a model whose identity has always been tied to long-distance exploration and difficult terrain. The company says the Himalayan family has sold more than 320,000 units globally over the past decade, covering both the original Himalayan and the current Himalayan 450.

The Himalayan 440 Is About Bringing Back the 411 Philosophy

The biggest story behind the Himalayan 440 isn’t its engine displacement. It is the decision to bring back the simpler Himalayan formula.

When the Himalayan 450 arrived in 2023, Royal Enfield transformed the motorcycle into a significantly more sophisticated adventure machine. Its 452cc liquid-cooled Sherpa engine produces 40.02 PS and 40 Nm, while the motorcycle uses ride-by-wire electronics, riding modes, a TFT display and a more sophisticated chassis.

The Himalayan 440 goes in a different direction.

It retains the upright ergonomics and unmistakable silhouette associated with the original Himalayan, but uses a simpler 443cc air-cooled, single-cylinder, SOHC engine. The engine has an 81mm bore and 86mm stroke and produces 25.4 bhp and 34 Nm. That makes it considerably less powerful than the Himalayan 450, but the long-stroke configuration is intended to provide accessible torque rather than outright performance.

That distinction is important. The Himalayan 440 isn’t trying to be a cheaper Himalayan 450 with fewer features. It is effectively Royal Enfield’s attempt to recreate the character of the older Himalayan with a newer powertrain and updated mechanical components.

Royal Enfield itself describes the motorcycle as an evolution of the original 411 philosophy, with “function over frills” and capability taking priority over complexity.

443cc Engine Gets More Torque and a Sixth Gear

The Himalayan 440 uses Royal Enfield’s 443cc LS440 long-stroke engine, the same basic powertrain architecture already used by the Scram 440.

The engine develops 25.4 bhp at 6,250 rpm and 34 Nm at 4,000 rpm, with the torque arriving relatively low in the rev range. It is paired with a six-speed gearbox, giving the motorcycle an extra ratio compared with the original Himalayan 411.

The sixth gear could be one of the more meaningful changes for people who actually intend to use the motorcycle for touring. The lower ratios can keep the engine usable on slower, rough terrain, while sixth gear gives the motorcycle a taller ratio for highway riding.

This is also where the Himalayan 440’s positioning becomes clearer. The 440 isn’t designed around high-speed performance figures. Its 34 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, relatively relaxed engine character and long-stroke configuration are more consistent with the kind of low-speed control and steady touring that defined the original Himalayan.

The Chassis Keeps the Adventure Focus

The Himalayan 440 uses a half-duplex split-cradle frame, with a 41mm telescopic front fork offering 200mm of travel and a linkage-type rear monoshock providing 180mm of wheel travel.

The motorcycle gets the more serious wheel configuration expected from an adventure bike: a 21-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear wheel. Both use spoke wheels with tube-type tyres.

Ground clearance stands at 220mm, while the 800mm seat height is notably accessible for an adventure motorcycle. The combination should make the Himalayan 440 easier to manage for shorter riders than many tall adventure motorcycles, while the 21-inch front wheel and long-travel suspension are aimed at handling broken roads, loose surfaces and trails.

The motorcycle weighs 199kg with 90 percent fuel and oil, according to Royal Enfield’s current specifications. It also has a 15-litre fuel tank and a 176kg payload with standard equipment.

That weight is worth noting because the Himalayan 440 isn’t an ultra-lightweight off-road motorcycle. Its advantage is instead the combination of relatively accessible seat height, long suspension travel, ground clearance and a torque-focused engine.

Braking and Practical Equipment Get a Major Update

Royal Enfield has also upgraded the braking hardware. The Himalayan 440 uses a 300mm front disc with a two-piston floating calliper and a 240mm rear disc with a single-piston floating calliper.

It comes with dual-channel ABS, with the rear ABS switchable for situations where riders want more control on loose terrain.

The motorcycle also gets a new LED headlamp, digital-analogue instrument cluster, Tripper navigation and a USB Type-C charging port. These additions are significant because they improve the motorcycle’s usefulness without pushing it toward the electronics-heavy character of the Himalayan 450.

There is also provision for luggage, with Royal Enfield offering accessories including hard panniers, a top box, touring seats, adventure handguards and engine protection. The company’s accessory strategy means the same motorcycle can be configured for everyday riding or longer expeditions depending on how much equipment the owner wants to add.

Himalayan 440 vs Himalayan 450: What Is the Difference?

This is probably the most important question for anyone considering the new motorcycle.

Specification Himalayan 440 Himalayan 450
Engine 443cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder 452cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder
Power 25.4 bhp 40.02 PS
Torque 34 Nm 40 Nm
Gearbox 6-speed 6-speed
Front suspension 41mm telescopic, 200mm travel 43mm USD, 200mm travel
Rear suspension Linkage monoshock, 180mm Linkage monoshock, 200mm
Front wheel 21-inch 21-inch
Rear wheel 17-inch 17-inch
Ground clearance 220mm —
Seat height 800mm 825–845mm adjustable
Fuel tank 15 litres 17 litres
Character Simpler, torque-focused adventure tourer More powerful, technology-focused ADV

The Himalayan 450 remains the significantly more capable motorcycle if outright performance, high-speed touring and advanced electronics are priorities. Its 452cc liquid-cooled engine makes 40.02 PS and 40 Nm, while its adjustable two-piece seat spans 825–845mm.

The Himalayan 440, however, has an entirely different appeal. Its 800mm seat height is 25mm lower than the minimum seat height of the Himalayan 450, and its simpler engine and equipment package should make it more approachable for riders who don’t necessarily need 40 PS or a sophisticated electronic package.

That makes the Himalayan 440 arguably closer in spirit to the original 411 than the Himalayan 450 is.

Himalayan 440 Colours and Price

  • The new Himalayan 440 is available in three colours: Sela Black, Mustang Brown and Nelong White.

The motorcycle is priced at ₹2.29 lakh ex-showroom in Tamil Nadu. Royal Enfield opened bookings on September 4, 2026, through its authorised dealerships and online channels.

The first motorcycles will also carry a special 10-year Himalayan anniversary badge on the fuel tank, giving the launch editions a small piece of the model’s history.

Who Should Buy the Himalayan 440?

The Himalayan 440 makes the most sense for riders who want an adventure motorcycle that can handle daily commuting, highways and rough roads without becoming overly complicated.

It should particularly appeal to riders who liked the Himalayan 411’s accessible nature but wanted a newer engine, a sixth gear, better braking and modern conveniences. The 800mm seat height is another important advantage for riders who find the taller Himalayan 450 intimidating.

At the same time, riders looking for strong highway acceleration, higher outright performance or a more advanced electronic package will have a clear reason to spend more on the Himalayan 450.

That distinction may ultimately be the Himalayan 440’s biggest strength. Rather than making every Himalayan progressively more sophisticated, Royal Enfield has created two motorcycles around different interpretations of adventure touring.

The Himalayan 440’s Bigger Significance

The launch is interesting beyond the motorcycle itself because it shows where Royal Enfield sees an opportunity in the adventure segment.

The original Himalayan succeeded partly because it wasn’t trying to be a high-performance enduro motorcycle. It was relatively approachable, mechanically straightforward and designed around the realities of long-distance riding in India.

A decade later, Royal Enfield is effectively bringing that idea back with a modernised mechanical package.

The Himalayan 440 therefore sits in an unusual position in Royal Enfield’s current portfolio. The Scram 440 already uses the same 443cc engine and targets crossover riding, while the Himalayan 450 occupies the more powerful and technologically sophisticated ADV space. The new Himalayan 440 fills the gap between those approaches with a more traditional adventure-bike layout and the original Himalayan’s visual identity.

And that may be exactly why Royal Enfield believes the Himalayan name still has room to grow after 10 years.

The company says the Himalayan family has crossed 320,000 global sales since the original motorcycle arrived, suggesting that the formula has evolved into considerably more than a single motorcycle.

The Himalayan 440 is, in many ways, Royal Enfield looking backwards to move the Himalayan story forward: less emphasis on technology, more emphasis on accessibility, mechanical simplicity and the freedom to take the long way around.
