US Declassified UFO Files: Why Thinking We Are Alone Is a Mistake

For decades, the question has never really gone away. Are we alone? Is there something out there, in the billions of galaxies stretching across this universe, that is aware of us the same way we are becoming aware of it? Governments have long treated this subject as fringe territory, something for late-night radio shows and conspiracy forums. But on May 8, 2026, that changed in a way most people did not expect.

The United States government officially released its largest-ever collection of declassified UFO records to the public, with no security clearance required.

This is not a theory. It happened.

What Is PURSUE and Why It Matters

The release was organised through a newly created government portal called PURSUE, which stands for the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters. The initiative followed a February 2026 directive by President Donald Trump, posted on Truth Social, in which he ordered the Pentagon and multiple federal agencies to identify, review, and release all files related to UFOs, unidentified aerial phenomena, and extraterrestrial life.

The Department of War launched the PURSUE website at war.gov/UFO on May 8, 2026, and the public response was staggering. The platform recorded 340 million hits within the first 12 hours alone. Since then, the site has crossed one billion total visits. That number alone tells you everything about how many people have been waiting for this moment.

The first release contained 162 distinct declassified files sourced from a multi-agency collaboration that included the Department of Defence, the FBI, NASA, the State Department, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. The materials span from 1944 through 2025 and include military infrared videos, photographs, investigative case files, witness testimonies, astronaut transcripts, and mission reports.

As Secretary of War Pete Hegseth put it: “These files, hidden behind classifications, have long fueled justified speculation, and it is time the American people see it for themselves.”

The government confirmed that redactions in the documents were limited strictly to protecting witness identities and the locations of sensitive military facilities.

A second tranche followed on May 22, 2026, adding approximately 64 more files, including 51 videos, six PDFs, and seven audio recordings spanning decades of incidents. The PURSUE program continues with additional tranches expected in the weeks ahead.

What Is Actually Inside the Files

The released materials cover a wide geographic and historical range. Some of the most compelling content comes from U.S. military platforms operating in Iraq, Syria, the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Aden, Greece, Africa, and over the continental United States.

One video, labelled the Syrian UAP instant acceleration, was captured from an infrared sensor aboard a U.S. military platform in 2021. The object displays sudden, dramatic speed changes that do not match any known aircraft behaviour. Another clip from the second tranche shows a 2022 formation of four UAPs over water near Iran. A third video, taken by the U.S. Coast Guard in April 2024, shows an unidentified object flying in close proximity to a civilian plane over the southeastern United States.

Among the most visually striking items is an infrared frame from a 2013 incident showing an eight-pointed star-like object with unusual contrast and motion. There is also newly declassified footage from Apollo 17, showing a triangular formation of anomalous dots in the lunar sky. That particular material has drawn significant attention from the space science community.

The FBI material comes largely from case file 62-HQ-83894, which contains hundreds of pages of eyewitness testimonies and public reports about UFO incidents between 1947 and 1968. The 2026 release included fewer redactions and several newly declassified pages not previously available to the public.

State Department cables from U.S. embassies in Papua New Guinea, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Mexico, and Tajikistan describe UAP-related incidents reported by local pilots, officials, and civilians. One 1994 cable from the U.S. Embassy in Tajikistan relayed the account of a commercial air crew who reported observing a strange object at 41,000 feet.

Among the pilot reports, one described a triangular and metallic UAP flying at 25,000 feet. Certain sensor files note objects exhibiting what internal documents describe as kinematic characteristics inconsistent with known adversary platforms, with no further explanation offered.

The bulk of the Pentagon material, 82 of the 162 files, consists of military incident reports filed between 2013 and 2026. These are not Cold War curiosities. These are recent.

The Road That Led Here: A Brief History of US Disclosure

To understand the significance of what happened this May, you need to look at how the United States arrived at this point.

The conversation did not start in 2026. It started, for most people, in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947, when something crashed in the desert, and the official explanation changed within 24 hours from a flying disc to a weather balloon. That inconsistency planted a seed of doubt that never fully went away.

The U.S. Air Force investigated UFO reports through a program called Project Blue Book from 1952 to 1969, ultimately declaring that most sightings had conventional explanations. But the program’s closure did not stop reports from coming in, especially from military pilots who had nothing to gain from making them up.

Then came 2017, when the New York Times published an investigation revealing the existence of a secret Pentagon program called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, or AATIP, which had been quietly funded at the request of then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. That story cracked open a conversation that could not be closed again.

In 2020, the Pentagon officially released three videos filmed by U.S. Navy pilots in 2004 and 2015. These were not grainy phone recordings. They were high-quality infrared footage showing objects moving in ways that defied easy explanation, changing direction, accelerating, and in one case appearing to rotate. The Pentagon confirmed the footage was real and that the objects remained unidentified.

The following year, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a preliminary assessment acknowledging that UAPs are real, that they represent a genuine flight safety concern, and that in a limited number of cases the objects appeared to exhibit unusual flight characteristics. No extraterrestrial origin was confirmed, but for the first time, the government was no longer officially brushing off the subject.

David Grusch: The Whistleblower Who Changed the Conversation

No discussion of recent UFO disclosure history is complete without David Grusch. In June 2023, Grusch, a decorated U.S. Air Force veteran and former intelligence official who had served on the UAP task force, went public with some of the most explosive claims in the history of this subject.

Grusch testified before Congress that the U.S. government maintains a secretive UFO retrieval program and that the government is in possession of craft of non-human origin, including, by his account, deceased non-human pilots recovered from crash sites. He described recoveries spanning several decades, involving not just the U.S. government but also defence contractors and private aerospace companies.

He described what he called a sophisticated disinformation campaign targeting the American public and said many more videos in government possession have not been declassified. He called for change, transparency, and accountability within these programs.

His account was called credible by some scientists and colleagues, while others urged caution, pointing out that verifiable physical evidence had not been presented publicly. The Pentagon cleared Grusch to speak on the record, which itself raised questions, since highly sensitive classified information would typically not be approved for public disclosure.

Whether or not every specific claim Grusch made holds up under full scrutiny, his testimony forced Congress and the public to take the subject seriously in a way that had not happened before. It directly contributed to the pressure that eventually led to the PURSUE initiative.

The Voice From Israel That Nobody Could Ignore

Long before PURSUE made headlines, one statement from an unexpected corner of the world had already shifted the entire conversation.

In December 2020, Professor Haim Eshed, the former head of Israel’s Defence Ministry space directorate, gave a remarkable interview to Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot. He was 87 years old, a retired general who had spent nearly 30 years leading the country’s space security programme, and by his own admission, had nothing left to lose.

What he said stopped people in their tracks. Eshed claimed that the U.S. and Israel have been in contact with extraterrestrial life representing what he called a Galactic Federation, and that President Trump was fully aware of it. He described a signed cooperation agreement between species and spoke of an underground base on Mars where American astronauts and alien representatives reportedly correspond. Trump had reportedly been on the verge of disclosing this publicly but was asked not to do so to prevent mass hysteria. According to Eshed, the extraterrestrials themselves had requested secrecy because humanity was simply not ready.

Neither the White House, Israeli officials, nor the Pentagon offered any response. That silence was, in its own way, as loud as the claims themselves.

Eshed did not speak like a man seeking attention. He spoke like someone who had spent decades sitting on something and finally decided the world deserved to hear it. Whether every specific claim holds up or not, a figure of his standing making them publicly in a mainstream newspaper is not something that can simply be filed away under conspiracy theory and forgotten.

So What Do the Files Actually Tell Us?

Here is the honest answer. The documents released so far do not contain a smoking gun. They do not show a craft landing on the White House lawn or confirm that extraterrestrial beings are being held in a facility somewhere in Nevada. What they do is something more significant in a quieter way.

They confirm that the U.S. government has been collecting, classifying, and internally debating UAP sightings for nearly 80 years. They confirm that trained military personnel, pilots, coast guard operators, and intelligence officials have repeatedly encountered objects they could not explain. They confirm that some of those objects exhibited behaviour inconsistent with any known aircraft or natural phenomenon.

The PURSUE platform is the beginning of a rolling disclosure process. More files are coming. The picture will keep developing.

The Bigger Question No File Can Answer

Every file, every video, every redacted paragraph brings us back to the same question that has haunted human beings since we first looked up at the night sky.

The universe contains somewhere between 200 billion and two trillion galaxies. Our galaxy alone contains hundreds of billions of stars, and most of those stars have planets. The mathematical probability that life emerged only once, only here, on this one pale blue dot, is genuinely difficult to defend. Scientists who have spent careers studying the conditions for life, from astrobiologists to physicists to astronomers, will generally tell you the same thing: the universe is too vast, too old, and too chemically complex for us to be its only inhabitants.

Honestly, the more you think about it, the more absurd the alternative becomes. Believing that life, in all of its complexity, sparked up exactly once, in one corner of one galaxy, among the hundreds of billions that exist, takes more imagination than simply accepting the possibility that we have company somewhere out there. The universe does not do things in small numbers. It makes stars by the trillion and planets by the billion. The idea that all of it exists just for us, that the rest is empty and indifferent, feels less like a scientific position and more like a refusal to look honestly at the scale of what surrounds us. It would not just be humbling to discover we are not alone. It would be the most logical outcome imaginable.

What the PURSUE files do is not confirm alien life. What they do is confirm that the U.S. government has been taking unexplained phenomena seriously for decades while telling the public there was nothing to see. That gap between the official story and the classified reality is itself a kind of answer.

The disclosure has only just begun. If the first 162 files generated 340 million page views in 12 hours and the site has already crossed one billion visits, imagine what each new tranche will bring.

Whatever is out there, the conversation is no longer happening behind closed doors.
